How to read a probability, what limits its precision, and how to check for yourself that the program is right.

Comment lire une probabilitéHow to read a probability

A 70% probability does not mean “you will win”. It means that, over many matches in the same situation, you would win about 7 out of 10. The other 3, you would lose, and that is not a program error: it is exactly what 70% announced.

An honest program is therefore not one that is always right, but one whose percentages hold true over time. That is what you check by comparing, band of probability by band, what was announced with what happened.

Open the menu (F2) and look at the “Models” section. For each mode, it shows how many matches have been recorded, which model is used and whether its announcements do better than MMR alone, with the accuracy measured on matches it has not seen. You can also note your own results and compare them with the announced percentages.

Here is the principle of the check. For example, if in the 60-70% band you have 40 matches, the program announced 65% on average and you won 26 of them, that is 65%, then its announcements are right in that band. If you had won 20, that is 50%, it would be too optimistic.

Keep the number of matches in mind before judging. With few matches in a band, chance alone is enough to create big gaps: with 10 matches, a gap of about 15 points between announced and real can happen by pure chance. A good verdict takes several dozen matches per band.
